A Parable of Suffering and Compassion

May 2025
Many of my dreams come in the form of a vision quest where i'm being taught about life through the symbolism in my dreams. This was one of those dreams. I wove in some teaching from Ram Dass in italics to help ground the parable. Enjoy!
In my dream last night there was a black crow caught on a wire. I open the window and it speaks to me - "get me out of here!" I call for Matt but i'm the one to do it. I set the crow free but he has the clips still in his wings - he is bloody from trying to escape himself - he knows to fully escape he needed the help of another.
The black crow symbolizes parts of ones own healing journey, feeling stuck, clawing at your own self to get free, fighting, resisting and finally surrender and asking God for help. For the ultimate freedom found only in God.
God has a smile of unbearable compassion. We feel we are suffering - God see's compassion. How do you bare suffering? By closing your heart. "Shutting the window"
Serve people
Its all perfect
The game is being open to all of it, the highs and the lows
All of it.
God opens the window and asks us if we want to play- "but i'm suffering," we say, "maybe later." - the window closes
Later the window opens - the suffering is worse than before, God smiles, would NOW be a good time to play?
The crow looks at God's smile and no longer sees what IT sees- it sees as God sees
"Yes, now. Right here, Right Now," says the crow.
The window stays open, a wind blows the wing free. The crow is free to go but instead it sits in the presence of God to heal.
For as long as it takes.
Until it flies once more, to carry the messages of the divine even higher than it had before.
I am the crow
I am the one who opens the window
I set my self free
God is all of this and more
God is the ALL
the one who sees as I AM
who smiles with compassion
and turns suffering into the graceful art of healing
the window is my heart
sometimes closed
sometimes open
But when its open I see all I need to see and the journey begins again.
when my heart is open I surrender to the all and let myself go free
when its closed my mind runs the show and the suffering remains
It's always now. Now is the time to surrender- to open the window and allow the eye of God to smile on you with compassion.
The mind was keeping the wing caught by thinking about how its wing was caught
but now the window is open
step out
be of service
look outside yourself
what is right in front of you?
be here now.
let the mind drop
let the heart be open
compassion is at your door
accept her as you would an old friend - come out to play regardless of the suffering
your in- open your eyes and focus on what is happening right in front of you. Transformation is happening now.
